Until the last few weeks when freight rates surged, shipping was having a tough time. Tanker and bulker earnings had collapsed and, despite the recovery in recent weeks, average earnings for the year are massively down on 2008. For example, a VLCC has averaged $37,000/day in 2009, compared with $92,000/day in 2008. How can they manage, you ask?
