Activity in the market this week...

17 December 2012

Spot market activity from Europe to the Far East has suddenly awoken from its slumber, although we are not quite experiencing the highs seen at the end of 2011. Indeed, rates remained flat on all parcel sizes from Rotterdam to the Far East this week.

December space has tightened from Houston to the Far East, with levels for 10,000mt parcels increasing by 2.9% w-o-w to approximately $70/mt.

The year-end rush out of the Middle East Gulf is evident, with rates for 15,000mt parcels to the Mediterranean and Rotterdam increasing by 7.1% and 9.4% w-o-w respectively to approximately $60/mt and $70/mt.

Rates for 3,000mt and 5,000mt parcels ex-Asia to Rotterdam increased by 6.2% and 7.0% respectively w-o-w to approximately $120/mt and $107/mt.

The transatlantic westbound route has hardly been a source of excitement, while freight rates for 3,000mt and 5,000mt parcels on the transatlantic eastbound trade lane increased by 4.2% and declined by 4.8% w-o-w respectively to approximately $50/mt and $40/mt.
