Three IMO 2/3, modern GSI built ‘MR’ Tankers have now been committed on subjects to the commodities trader Trafigura. These include the 2009 built 'MERIOM TOPAZ' (50,352 dwt, built Guangzhou S.Y. Int., 2009) and the two sisters vessels 'MERIOM GLORY' (50,352 dwt, built Guangzhou S.Y. Int., 2008) and 'MERIOM IRIS' (50,352 dwt, built Guangzhou S.Y. Int., 2008). The owners were aiming for a price very close to $70 million, and while the price agreed is undisclosed, reports vary between mid/high $60 million to the low 70's. If subjects are successfully lifted, the purchase will mark an entry into product tanker ownership for Trafigura. In April 2012, the sister vessel ex-'MERIOM LILY' (50,352, built Guangzhou S.Y. Int., 2012) was sold at a price just excess of $30 million. Elsewhere in the market, the zinc coated methanol carrier mt 'SHOKO MARU' (30,952 dwt, built Minami Nippon, 1998) has been sold to Middle East based buyers for a price in the region of $8.8 million. The capability to carry methanol has proved to be an advantage in recent months with buyers offering a significant premium on the price over standard product tankers in order to secure the tonnage.
